History of Warren Mere
Warren Mere, formerly known as Warren Lodge dates back to the 16th century and was one of Sir Edwin Lutyens first architectural design work. Best known for the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, The India Gate in Delhi and the New Delhi, Lutyens work still stands today for us to admire.
Grade II listed, Warren Mere was extensively remodelled and extended by Lutyens in 1896 for his friends Robert and Barbara Webb. Whilst staying with the Webbs in their former home, Lutyens took Lady Emily Lytton on a moonlit bike ride around Warren Mere, breaking in through a window to show her his fine work of the grounds and house. It is said that it must of made an impact on her and they were married the following year and spent the first few days of their honeymoon at Warren Lodge, at the invitations of the Webbs.
Lutyens once again, remodelled and extended Warren Mere in 1909 for the then new owner Lord Stamfordham adding the long guest and service wing.
With such a beautiful documented story of a courtship, it’s exceptionally wonderful that Warren Mere is now offering as a wedding venue for future couples to say their ‘I do’s’ and start their married lives together.
"Every garden scheme should have a backbone, a central idea beautifully phrased. Every wall, path, stone and flower should have its relationship to the central idea."
-Sir Edwin Lutyens
